sparring!
Saturday, June 13, 2009

i notice that no one's posting anymore. its been ages, SOMEONE POST. and the holiday's boring, and the school day's stressing, argh. I need to find smth to do-- mostly i while away time reading, or at the com. doing a bit of homework. still haven't done sui bi. sigh sigh sigh. anyways, have smth to post about

sparred for the first time today, in taekwondo ( yay...) okok, I know. I see the question mark thingies over your heads ( that sounded weird) yeah, decided to take it up ( what? last year?) for excercise. I mean i was actually in wushu in nanyang( didn't win any medals, didn't come close ) so i thought i needed excercise even though i have soccer cos that's only once a week. and didn't want to waste martial art background cos their all roughly the same anyway. taekwondo's easier. more kicks, less stances.

anyway. back to topic. first sparring. which means first time fighting against others. mostly i think you're supposed to kick. kinda early to do sparring, actually, cos im only yellow belt and sparring's not until green ( it goes, white, yellow tip, yellow, green tip, green, blue tip, blue, red tip [or brown], red, black tip [dunno whether have or not] black, first dan, second dan ....... i think ninth or tenth dan is the last)

so, some green belt guy needed an opponent and the instructor just chose me ( wonder why?) then he reminded the guy i was only yellow belt ( then he got this relieved sigh, i was kind of indignant) well, watching others spar, you're supposed to kick, retreat, and block. i did only one. kick. i just kept advancing, refused to back down at all, until i was so close i could've punched the guy in the face, but i didn't.

it was no contact sparring, which is kind of pointless because i can't really control well. anyway, we were in a kind of lock, close but trying to kick each other still. I got kicked quite a few times but i didn't really care cos it hardly hurt. which was part of the reason why i kept advancing, cos i wasn't scared, or hurting. the instructor reminded me that i wasn't supposed to let him kick me, so i retreated a bit. anyway, spent the time avoiding about 3 kicks? then after that he kind of got tired and i did my advance advance advance thingy. managed to get in 2 high kicks, to the head :)

well he did managed to kick me btwn the legs, but being a girl, it didn't hurt (yay) so while people did some jeering or wadever i just advanced more, he seemed to think i would double up in pain or smth, even tho some guy in the crowd who was from my guitar class said "oh. its that girl again." so, it was right turning kick, left turning kick, right, left etc. I tried a side kick once but couldn't pull it off well due ot time and space constraint ( turning kick faster) heard some ppl who were watching ( 2 white, 2 yellow tip, 1 red tip) wonder aloud about the turning kicks.

after all, the instructor, when i told him i didn't know how to spar, said just do turning kicks. which was exactly what i did. i guess i should have done front kick too. anyway, it ended, we bowed, and the instrustor repeated. "just yellow belt only" and then"why are you panting?" i pointed out that i was panting too, but i guess it was meant to tell the green belt he was too weak ( yay me)

so, all in all , felt a bit winded, think he managed akick to the stomach area, but other wise fine, panting, and decidedly i like sparring as long as im allowed to keep advancing and see the other guy almost helpless (even tho im quite helpless too, too close) joined friends ( fellow yellow belts) who were laughing about "kick until no mother's day", and then "more like cannot pee" etc. etc. (" mother's day and pee is different place one blahblahblahblah") but, no problem. just peed in the shower anyway.
